We recently exhibited at the Affordable Wedding Expo in Brunswick, Melbourne, and had the opportunity to speak to a number of future brides and grooms about planning the music for their big day. In this blog post we share the top 5 questions – and our responses!
1. What are the different entertainment options for ceremony versus the reception?
For the ceremony, we recommend something more romantic and subdued like an acoustic duo (singer and guitarist) or strings arrangement (duo, trio or quartet). You could also just play music that has been curated by one our DJs for this part of the wedding. For the reception, you want dancing! Here you can select a DJ on their own, DJ with live musicians such as a saxophonist or singer, or a full band. You can also mix and match these options; some couples like to have an acoustic duo for dinner with a DJ or full band to follow after the formalities are done and the dance floor has opened!
2. How far in advance should I book?
Often entertainment is left until last in the wedding planning process, but it should be treated no differently to any other service that is booked – the earlier you get in, the better! We have bookings made up to 18 months in advance. Your options are obviously limited as you get closer to the big day so don’t neglect this important part of your wedding.
3. Do you have any recommendations for the wedding reception running sheet?
Yes – as a general rule of thumb, the sooner you get the formalities out of the way (speeches, cake cutting, etc), the better. Having formalities scattered throughout the reception means there is a stop-start dance floor, which can mean losing energy. Work with your venue to ensure you get the order of events you (the client) want! Check out our popular blog post about nailing your running sheet for more tips.
4. How much should I budget for entertainment?
For a One More Song DJ for your full reception (including all sound equipment, set up and pack down), you’re looking at around $1,200. Add on $100 for lighting. Live musicians accompanying the DJ start from $650 for two hours. For more information about our pricing, download a copy of our pricing guide here.
5. Do you provide an MC service?
Yes, some of our DJs can provide a basic MC service for an additional $150. The benefit of this is the DJ can work closely with the venue to make the reception run smoothly while you and your guests enjoy yourselves. It can be better not to coerce an unwilling family member into performing the MC duties!
