For our first Talent Spotlight blog, we sat down with guitarist Dave from The Party, a wedding band that brings killer tracks and a great energy to your big day!
Tell us a bit about The Party
We are five great mates who play the best music ever created (in our opinion!): Ant on vocals, Nels on bass, Rick on drums, me on guitar, and Twist (nicknamed due to his starring role as Pete Twist in the children’s TV series Round the Twist) on synth/keytar.
We love playing tunes and getting the whole party involved – even on the mic if they feel the urge (until the bride tells us we have to get her uncle off the stage!).
Outside of being in The Party, we all have day jobs – paramedic, lawyer, accountant, tennis club manager and organic produce manufacturer. We’re in The Party because we genuinely love it – and our clients notice! A couple from a recent wedding we played at wrote in their review of us: “The vibe they gave off was brilliant and it felt like they were having as much fun as the guests!”.
How long have you guys been around? How did it all begin?
It all started when our singer and I played a few songs at my own wedding in 2011 (self-indulgent, but what better way is there to force people to listen to you?). We had both played in original bands but had never been on stage together. We absolutely loved it and thought “Why don’t we keep doing this?”. It led to more gigs – we added some guys from our original bands and The Party was born.
Describe your repertoire.
We are flexible but in our experience there is a formula that never fails: start with some genuinely old classics to get the older folk in the room up and dancing (we’re talking Beatles, Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, that type of vibe), then crank out the 80s hits to keep everyone up and about, and then by the time you get to the recent stuff, you can’t get people off the D-floor.
We also add specific requests to our set lists as agreed with couples ahead of their big day.
Apart from weddings, what other type of events do you play?
We’ve played plenty of corporate events – particularly end-of-year parties – and a few milestone birthdays, but basically we’re happy to play anywhere there’s a crowd ready to get busy.
Which songs go off the most at weddings?
We love Footloose. It sounds cheesy when you say it, but we play it much quicker than the original and drop it towards the end of the night – and people lose it! Lover Lover by Sonia Dada is always massive too.
…And corporate events?
Uptown Funk never misses.
What are your tips when it comes to choosing entertainment?
Choosing the right entertainment is the most important decision for your event. When it becomes a memory, what people remember most is everyone dancing and singing together and all the love in the room. Very few remember what flowers you had on your tables. So choose your entertainment wisely! When you’re dealing with an agency, ask about the different options to cover different parts of the night (for example, for a wedding, you may want an acoustic duo for the earlier part of your reception and a DJ to break up The Party sets!). Get the entertainment right – everything else flows from there.
